International bench-marking and best practice

Science is always changing, so we continuously update our skills and stay at the forefront of new research in laboratory design to maintain the knowledge base and expertise required for leading-edge projects. Our involvement with international conferences and on standards committees – as well as our own commitment to research and development in the built environment – means we deliver design and technical solutions that are fit-for-purpose and future-thinking.

We distill complex technical issues into practical answers – enabling you to make informed decisions, and to act with confidence.

Environmentally-conscious design

There are many environmental challenges facing the world and the way we inhabit it. The responsibility for scientific facilities therefore is two-fold: firstly, to create an environment where world-class science can be conducted, and secondly, to build in an environmentally responsible way.

There are a wide range of technologies available that can be integrated or combined, in various ways, in order to achieve sustainable goals. Not all will be suitable for every project, so we guide you in selecting the most appropriate systems to suit your current and future requirements.

Our values

Our purpose is to design built environments that fundamentally improve the way science is conducted in New Zealand and in the region. We achieve this from a strong values base, which guides how we behave and how we make decisions.

Trust and respect

We listen carefully to our clients’ needs and reflect these accurately in our work. We do what we say we will do, we don’t let people down, and we ensure our internal and consultant teams align with these values too.

Creativity

This comes from having a passion for continual improvement and the critical thinking required to create inspiring, exciting, and progressive solutions.

Accountable and appropriate

In order to complete our work to standard and on time, we take responsibility for what we do and say. This means taking ownership of the quality of our work, providing appropriate solutions, thinking our work through and doing it well so that we are also proud of what we produce.

Caring

For ourselves and our community.

Honest and ethical

Our reputation as a company and as individuals is critically important. This is expressed by maintaining the ethical standards of our professional body and undertaking work that is positive for our society and environment.

In practice, we build positive relationships with all of the people we work with by communicating in a constructive and respectful way.

Our history

Lab-works Architecture was established in 2001 by Pynenburg & Collins Architects after a decade of working on an increasing number and diverse scope of laboratory projects. As New Zealand’s first and largest science-focused design practice, we offer a very specialised service for an important and strategic niche in New Zealand’s science, education and economic sectors.

With a team of under 30 architects and technicians, we remain small enough to have the continuity of personal involvement, but also big enough to get your project completed on time and to budget.

We are now established as award winning leaders in the design and implementation of scientific buildings and facilities, having undertaken a significant body of work that covers a wide range of science types.
