Lab-works Offices

Dixon Street
Wellington

Lab-works Architecture needed more space and a change of environment.  A top floor space in Dixon Street offered excellent basic qualities that form the foundation of the design solution- height, great natural light (through both skylights and south windows), and a simple and robust roof structure.

The space has been completely stripped out and refitted with the basic brief that the result should:

  • be enjoyable to be in,
  • foster a creative attitude in staff and inspire expectations in clients,
  • be flexible to allow for day to day changes, as well as long term growth,
  • be an assured and confident architectural environment.

The design concept is centred around large uninterrupted floating roof planes, simple free standing three dimensional elements and basic organising planes placed in the space.

The height of the space is emphasised through a dominant central full height wall, and the predominant use of self finished materials- Hardboard, villaboard, concrete block, customwood, steel, and timber floors.

A semi permeable connection between the public areas and the back of office has been explored, with both broad views and glimpses between, so that the activities of the working office are not a mystery to those visiting.
