The University of Otago - Science Precinct Laboratory redevelopment

Lab-works Architecture is pleased to announce that the multi-million dollar upgrade of the University of Otago's science building is only months away from completion. The first stages of this project were completed in time for the 2017 academic year with the remainder of the building due to be complete and fully operational in January 2018.

Lab-works Architecture is undertaking this project in collaboration with Parker Warburton Team Architects.

The University of Otago are focussed on providing teaching and research facilities for their staff and students which are of the highest international standing. This project will provide the Science Division and Chemistry Department in particular with modern laboratory teaching environments which allow for flexibility to accommodate new teaching and research methods and multiple classes being taught in the same space at the same time.

Features of the completed building will include ground floor teaching laboratories which will accommodate 200 first year students across a range of science subjects, the opening up of previously fully enclosed laboratories so that the teaching of science is more visible, and easily adjustable benching and fume cupboards so that the facilities are fully ‘accessible' to all people with disabilities. Spaces within the laboratory zone will enable small group teaching, discussion and breakout.
